Juniper Networks Providing Secure Cloud Environments with Virtual Firewalls

With virtualization and cloud computing enabling companies to gain the agility needed to accelerate the implementation of new applications, technologies and features, it’s no wonder the cloud is becoming the “new normal.” But the new, faster rate of innovation the cloud brings also introduces modern security risks just as quickly and requires that organizations examine different infrastructure security strategies. The issue is that many still rely exclusively on physical security, such as firewall appliances sitting in the network. These solutions, which are not easily updated, are becoming increasingly challenged to keep up with the dynamic nature of today’s IT environment and can leave organizations vulnerable to the latest threats.

In the virtual world, virtual machines (VM) can be highly dynamic with frequent add, move, and change operations. This complicates the ability to attach security policies to VM instantiation and track security policies with VM movement. The result is difficulty in assessing whether you’re fully protected, not to mention whether you will meet all your security requirements. In short, all the good that virtualization and cloud computing can bring may be easily overshadowed by a loss of visibility and control and, ultimately, a more vulnerable IT and application stack.

To address these security challenges, Juniper Networks is working with Verizon to make our virtual firewall, the vSRX (formerly named Firefly Perimeter), easily accessible through the Verizon Cloud Marketplace, a dynamic online storefront that provides software-based cloud resources that are certified to operate in the Verizon Cloud. This joint effort allows users to keep pace with evolving threats in the cloud without sacrificing reliability, visibility, and control.

Juniper’s vSRX delivers a complete virtual security solution, including core firewall, robust networking, advanced security services and automated lifecycle management capabilities that enable users to dynamically deploy and scale firewall protection in a VM format. The virtual firewall also now supports enhanced features that add Layer 7 firewall protection to its existing suite of services to boost security in cloud and hybrid data centers. Additionally, when combined with Junos Space Security Director, organizations can significantly improve security policy configuration, management, and visibility of their environment.
