Reasonably decent flip phone

I am that odd Millennial who refuses to get a smartphone. But I still text! I need a dumbphone that is adequate for more than making a 911 call should I find I've fallen and I can't get up, you know? After the absolutely horrible "upgrade" flip phone that Verizon provided when my reliable older 3G one was made obsolete, I was not hopeful that it was even possible to get a Verizon dumbphone that was not junk. However, this one is far superior to my previous junk phone (which ended up shattered into two pieces from a minor drop). Foremost, the predictive texting (including speed of entry it can keep up with) is pretty adequate. There are some frustrating points: It still does not automatically predict that pronoun "I" and it is hard to capitalize words that it does not assume need capitalization. Also, I have yet to find a way to keep it set to predictive T9 texting, but aside from these nuisances, I already find I am back to texting much quicker, as I used to with my older flip-phone. Punctuation menu alone is a hundred times easier to navigate than on my previous phone. Group texting has its frustrating quirks, but those of us who are in the Never-Smartphone crowd expect to put up with some such inconveniences. Other weird quirks: You cannot set a silent (vibrate only) alarm on this phone. You cannot change ringer volume with the phone closed. And the installed ringtones are all pretty dumb. Still, no dealbreakers. This is a way, way better phone overall than the other Verizon option at the same price point (which truly deserves all the 1-star ratings). There are a bunch of extra apps and features installed, but it is easy to avoid using them if you don't want them. For instance, I've found the weather app mildly useful, but I'm not really tempted to go Youtube surfing on the tiny screen. It's nice to know that in an emergency I can set up a hotspot or use Google maps to navigate, but they're inconvenient enough on a flip phone that I'm going to use the phone mostly for calls and texts. Which is what I want! Look for the other lengthy review which mentions lots of details (like not being able to adjust the ringtone volume without opening the phone, or that the outside buttons depress a bit too easily). That reviewer was spot-on in all assessments and helped me decide it was worth trying this phone when I had to make a quick replacement choice.

I prefer a flip phone for the privacy it gives over that not afforded by flat cell phone. The Flip3 is slightly larger and a bit heavier than the one I replaced, however it is still easy to use and conveniently small enough to slip into the zippered pocket of my coat. Quality seems good (I have had it for only 2 weeks.) and function keys are conveniently and intuitively located.

Overall the phone is working well. We purchased this phone for our 12 year old as a way for them to be able to communicate with us without giving them access to the internet and games etc It is advertised as voice and text only. These functions are working well. However - it appears it also has YouTube videos which is NOT what we wanted to give our kid access to and also not advertised. We were not able to see all these features as we weren’t able to open the box / activate the phone prior to purchase. We would not purchase knowing this.
