NEW YORK - The Bell Atlantic Luge Series returns to Long Island, July 7-9, as the United States Luge Association (USA Luge) seeks aspiring young athletes for its development team. Clinics will be held on the campus of the State University of New York's College at Old Westbury.

During the Bell Atlantic Junior Luge Series, USA Luge National and Olympic team coaches and athletes teach youngsters, ages 10-14, the basics of riding a luge sled-including positioning, steering, and stopping. Once these skills are developed, the young athletes then make several runs down a paved luge course on wheel-equipped luge sleds. Those who show the most promise are invited to train on ice next winter at a USA Luge training complex, and they will be considered for spots on the 2001-2002 USA Luge Development Team.

Two-time overall World Cup champion, two-time World Championship bronze medalist, 2000 Inaugural Winter Goodwill Games gold medalist and 1998 Olympic bronze medalist Brian Martin is a graduate of the 1987 Junior Luge Series. Most of the athletes on the USA Luge Junior National Team were discovered through the Bell Atlantic Junior Luge Series.

The clinics will take place on the campus of SUNY College at Old Westbury, near the Clark Center, Friday - Sunday, July 7-9, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 to 5 p.m.

The cost is $15 per child and includes a USA Luge tee shirt from Bell Atlantic.
