NEW YORK -- The proposed merger of SBC and Ameritech is just the latest
evidence of the rapidly evolving communications marketplace in the United
States, as companies develop the strength to compete on local, national and
global levels and satisfy changing customer needs. With our merger last year,
we built the scale and scope and assembled the "first-mile" assets - the
connection to customers' homes and offices -- to enable us to serve customers
effectively in such a marketplace.

Now we are working to secure our competitive advantage by achieving early
entry into long distance and data, enabling us to serve the full range of our
customers' needs and to follow them wherever they go, be it in national or
global markets. It's time for regulators to act as quickly as the marketplace and
approve our applications to provide those services. We're confident that we
will be an early entrant and that our approach will enable us to take on all
comers, those already in the market and those to come.

Bell Atlantic - formed through the merger of Bell Atlantic and NYNEX - is at the
forefront of the new communications and information industry. With more than
41 million telephone access lines and 6.7 million wireless customers worldwide,
Bell Atlantic companies are premier providers of advanced wireline voice and
data services, market leaders in wireless services and the world's largest
publishers of directory information. Bell Atlantic companies are also among the
world's largest investors in high-growth global communications markets, with
operations and investments in 22 countries.
