COLLEGE STUDENTS USE INTERNET TO SIGN UP FOR PHONE SERVICE

BOSTON--Aug. 15, 1996--This fall, cyber-savvy college students
can beat the back-to-school rush for local phone service. Instead of calling their
local NYNEX business office or signing up on campus, students at New York University,
Syracuse University and Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., can subscribe on-line
by "visiting" NYNEX's Web page.

As part of a trial of Internet phone subscription, NYNEX mailed an information
package to the homes of the three schools' incoming and returning students in late
July. The mailer includes directions to the appropriate section of NYNEX's Web Page.
The package also includes a paper subscription form for those who prefer old-fashioned
U.S. mail.

Visitors to the Web Page input their billing information, including the desired service
start date, and e-mail it to NYNEX for processing.

Last September, NYNEX received approximately 8,500 service requests from Syracuse
University students, approximately 3,000 from NYU students and about 1,000 from Bentley
students.

Subscribing over the Internet offers students a convenient option as well as relieving
the heavy volume of phone and on-campus requests, according to John DiNapoli, NYNEX
director of consumer markets. "Depending on the results of this trial,"
DiNapoli said, "we hope to expand Internet subscription to more colleges next
year."
