NEW YORK -- George E. Famulare Jr., Verizon Real Estate Operations manager, George E. Famulare Jr.has been named one of the Top "25 Newsmakers" for 2002 by Engineering News-Record, a business magazine covering the construction industry. Famulare is being recognized for helping to lead the restoration of Verizon's 140 West St. building, which was severely damaged by the World Trade Center terrorist attacks.

Famulare and the other award-winners will be honored at Engineering News-Record's annual awards luncheon April 3 in New York City.

"When you look catastrophe in the face, as George and his team did on September 11, it can be difficult to stay calm and focused," said Paul Lacouture, president Verizon Network Services. "There is no doubt that George's and the team's quick action on that day saved lives, as well as millions of dollars of vital telecommunications equipment."

"As the dust cleared, we saw that the collapse of the World Trade Center had left our 140 West St. building riddled with holes, drenched in water and scattered with huge mounds of debris," added Lacouture. "Tackling what some may have considered an overwhelming task, George and his team immediately began to restore the facility -- working through nearly every structural, electrical and technological challenge imaginable. We're very proud of the work George has done, and we're very pleased he is receiving this honor."
