DALLAS -- GTE Directories Corporation today announced that all of the 804 U.S. directory titles and over 40.7 million copies of The Everything Pages telephone directories it publishes for GTE will now contain White and Yellow Pages sections printed on paper containing a minimum of 40 percent recycled content.

This marks a 10 percent increase in recycled content in GTE's directories over the past year. GTE is now ahead of industry guidelines set by the Yellow Pages Publishers Association (YPPA), which call for a minimum of 30 percent recycled content for its members' directories in 1997.

"Raising the recycled content of the paper we use to print millions of telephone directories nationwide is a major part of our continued commitment to making our product environmentally friendly," said GTE Directories Vice President - Printing David H. Rawles. "We are now a full year and 10 percent ahead of YPPA's guidelines.

"When you combine our recycled content with the fact that all our directories are totally recyclable from cover to cover; that we use recycled soya-based inks and earth-friendly glues; and that we recycle waste paper in our three printing plants; you come up with directories from GTE that are environmentally sound while also being durable and easy-to-use," Rawles added.

GTE also reduced the size of its directory in 1996 to make it easier to use and to store. Rawles estimated that 5,000 tons of paper will be saved by GTE over the first year of its conversion to the smaller format.

GTE Directories is a leader in the business of linking buyers and sellers through effective advertising and information media. The company provides sales and other directory-related services for more than 2,400 directories worldwide, with a total circulation of 80 million copies. It develops and markets new media services, such as GTE's SuperPages interactive service (http://www.superpages.GTE.net), a premier Internet-based advertising and information resource. The company is a unit of GTE Corporation, Stamford, Conn.
