STAMFORD, Conn. -- GTE Corp. today named George H. Conrades corporate executive vice president and president of GTE Internetworking, the company's new data unit, reporting to GTE President Kent B. Foster. He also was named a member of GTE's Executive Leadership Committee, a team of senior executives that works closely with GTE's Office of the Chairman in identifying and addressing key strategic issues. The appointment is effective immediately.

Conrades, 58, was president and chief executive officer of BBN, a leading provider of high performance end-to-end Internet solutions such as World Wide Web site hosting, network security, consulting, systems integration, and dedicated and dial-up Internet access for government and commercial customers.

GTE completed a successful tender offer for approximately 95 percent of all outstanding BBN shares on June 10, 1997 and expects to finalize the acquisition later this summer. In addition to BBN, GTE Internetworking will include the existing GTE Intelligent Network Services group and will be responsible for the implementation of GTE's new Internet Protocol network.

Conrades' principal office will be in Dallas, Texas, although he will maintain an office in Cambridge, Mass., as well.

Conrades served as president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of BBN. Prior to joining BBN, he had been employed for more than 30 years at IBM, most recently as senior vice president and general manager of IBM United States.

A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University in 1961 with a B.A. degree in physics and mathematics, Conrades received his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1971. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Westinghouse and of several start-up companies in health care and bio-pharmaceuticals.

With revenues of more than $21 billion in 1996, GTE (www.gte.com) is one of the largest publicly held telecommunications companies in the world. In the United States, GTE offers local and wireless service in 29 states and long-distance service in all 50 states. GTE was the first among its peers to offer "one-stop shopping" for local, long-distance and Internet access services. Outside the United States, where GTE has operated for more than 40 years, the company serves over 6.5 million customers. GTE is also a leader in government and defense communications systems and equipment, directories and telecommunications-based information services, and aircraft-passenger telecommunications.
