IRVING, Texas - GTE named Lawrence R. Whitman, vice president - finance and planning, to serve as acting deputy chief financial officer until the expected close of the company's merger with Bell Atlantic around the end of the first quarter.

Daniel P. O'Brien, currently GTE executive vice president - finance and CFO, will be on a full-time assignment to develop plans for GTE Internetworking to become a public corporation, as previously announced. O'Brien has been designated executive vice president and CFO of GTE Internetworking, effective at merger close.

Whitman is also designated to become vice president and controller of the merged GTE/Bell Atlantic company.
