BURLINGTON, Mass. - GTE Internetworking, a division of the GTE Corporation (NYSE: GTE), today announced an addition to its suite of Site Patrol managed Internet security services. Site Patrol for Firewall-1, based on the market leading firewall solution from Check Point Software Technologies, enables a corporation to maintain control of its security policy while GTE Internetworking provides monitoring, response and shared management of their Internet security equipment. In addition, the new service adds a second level of perimeter security by integrating periodic firewall vulnerability scans as part of the service. GTE Internetworking is the only service provider to integrate vulnerability scans in a managed Internet security offering.

"The combination of these two leading companies and technologies, gives us the utmost confidence that our network will be more secure from outside attacks and hackers while still giving us some control over our security policy," said Bob Turcotte, IT Director of DataTranslation, a Beta customer of Site Patrol for Firewall-1. "Knowing that GTE's security experts will also be running vulnerability scans helps ensure an extra layer of security that other managed security services lack."

The shared management of Site Patrol for FireWall-1 provides an alternative to Site Patrol for Gauntlet, a fully-managed service in which GTE Internetworking performs all firewall management functions for companies that do not wish to provide their own internal firewall administration. With support for multiple firewalls, GTE Internetworking offers customers a choice in purchasing managed Internet security for both of the market-leading firewall platforms.

Increased Flexibility and Choice

Companies are increasingly concerned about maintaining rigorous Internet security without relinquishing control of their corporate security polices. Using GTE Internetworking's new shared management model, customers maintain control of their corporate security policies using the robust feature set provided by Check Point Fire Wall-1. At the same time, GTE's dedicated security experts monitor all activity through the firewall 24 hours a day, seven days a week, prepared to respond immediately to any unusual activity.

"Our customers have asked for a solution where they share some of the responsibility in managing the security of their network," said Mike Shumway, director of GTE Internetworking's managed Internet security services. "We have responded with a service that allows the savvy firewall manager to retain control of their perimeter security policy while still providing them 24x7 monitoring and security by GTE's security experts. Site Patrol for FireWall-1 goes a step further by integrating periodic vulnerability scans to provide firewall managers ongoing proof that their security policy is solid."

Site Patrol is an end-to-end security solution including a hardware platform, the firewall, the operating system, emergency intervention equipment and a proven set of monitoring and response procedures. The service also provides system maintenance and ongoing software updates. Site Patrol for FireWall-1 also includes GTE Internetworking Site Scan Service to help protect an organization's network from Internet attacks by detecting vulnerabilities in Internet-based network devices. Site scans are included on either a monthly or quarterly basis.

"Site Patrol for FireWall-1 meets the needs of customers seeking the highest assurance network protection with the most flexible management options," said, Asheem Chandna, vice president of marketing and business development, Check Point Software Technologies, Inc. "Check Point is pleased to be working with GTE Internetworking to offer proven incident recognition and response procedures to enterprises faced with increasing security challenges."
