DALLAS, Texas -- The GTE SuperPages directory now features an interactive detailed mapping capability, which allows a user to view on the computer screen the location of any of millions of U.S. businesses.

The GTE SuperPages interactive directory service includes 11 million U.S. businesses and a web site directory with more than 60,000 business web sites. Now, with mapping, a user can click on any of the 11 million addresses in SuperPages and view a map showing where that business is located.

By using the zoom feature, the SuperPages user can zoom in to show as much detail as the nearest major intersection and even some side streets, or the user can zoom out to show the location of a business in relation to the entire United States.

A user who wants to know how to get from point A to point B can do so by clicking on each address and then using directional arrows to produce a series of map segments showing the streets leading from point A to point B.

By using the GTE SuperPages interactive Yellow Pages directory, a consumer or business user can search electronically for suppliers of millions of products and services. The searches can be customized to be as broad or as narrow as the user desires, and the service is free.

Other New Features Scheduled in Coming Months

Patrick Marshall, vice president of New Media Services for GTE Directories, said a number of new SuperPages features are scheduled to go online over the next several months.

Proximity searches, which enable a user to locate a category of businesses nearest a particular reference point, will be one of the next features to go online. With a proximity search, for example, a SuperPages user could locate all the restaurants within one-mile radius of a home or hotel.

The SuperPages' new maps are supplied by Vicinity Corporation, headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif. Founded in August 1995, Vicinity has established itself through key partner/customer alliances as the premier supplier of geographically oriented or "GeoEnabled" content and services exclusively for the World Wide Web.

In addition to the SuperPages directory, GTE offers Internet access in Dallas/Fort Worth, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Tampa, with plans to offer access capability nationwide.

The SuperPages interactive business directory is a service of GTE Directories, based in Dallas/Fort Worth, one of the world's largest telephone directory companies. It annually publishes or provides sales, consulting and other services relating to 2,400 directory titles throughout the United States, as well as Canada, Europe, Asia and Latin America. Circulation totals 80 million copies. GTE Directories' other advertising services include ON CALL(R) audiotex services and Quick Tips(R) electronic consumer information.

The company was named a 1994 winner of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, which recognizes U.S. companies that have outstanding quality management systems. GTE Directories is a part of GTE Corp., Stamford, Conn, one of the largest publicly held telecommunications companies in the world.
