LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES AND PCS PRIMECO DEMONSTRATE
ENHANCED VOICE QUALITY OF VOCODER ON PERSONAL
COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES WIRELESS SYSTEM

DALLAS - Lucent Technologies is demonstrating the kind
of high quality
wireless voice communications its 13 kilobit-per-second voice encoder
(vocoder) can provide, using spectrum on PCS PrimeCo's Code Division
Multiple Access (CDMA) Personal Communications Services (PCS)
commercial network.

The demonstration takes place at Lucent Technologies' exhibit at
Wireless '96, an annual event sponsored by the Cellular Telephone
Industry Association (CTIA).

"This is the first public CTIA demonstration of the 13 kb/s vocoder
being used in a commercial PCS application," said Scott Erickson,
vice
president of marketing, wireless equipment group, Lucent Technologies.
"The 13 kb/s vocoder makes it possible to offer wireless voice
quality that is comparable with land line voice quality, enabling
service providers to offer their subscribers a superior level of
service."

Through the operational PCS CDMA mini cell on display at Lucent
Technologies' booth and using Qualcomm QAP 1900 phones, 13 kb/s
vocoder access is provided to PCS PrimeCo's PCS network in Houston,
enabling show attendees to judge the enhanced voice quality on calls
they place themselves.

In September 1995, Lucent Technologies was chosen by PCS PrimeCo to
build complete, end-to-end wireless systems in six of eleven of PCS
PrimeCo's major markets. The agreement, potentially worth half a
billion dollars, calls for Lucent Technologies to supply and install
complete networks - from hardware, including base stations and
switching equipment, to software - to enable PCS PrimeCo to quickly
bring its PCS network on line. PCS CDMA 1900 phone calls already have
been made in almost all PCS PrimeCo markets.

Lucent Technologies is producing all of the code division multiple
access (CDMA) PCS mini cells for PrimeCo's network at Lucent's Product
Realization Center in Mt. Olive, N.J.

To meet its customers' demands for PCS equipment, the Center
established an organizational structure that is project-oriented, and
put all of the players - product managers, engineers, production,
installation and support functions - in one building, which reduces
the time it takes to get a product to market.

PCS PrimeCo, the four-way wireless partnership of AirTouch
Communications, Bell Atlantic, NYNEX and US WEST, won 11 U.S. licenses
to provide PCS services covering a population of more than 57 million
people.

Lucent Technologies is the new systems and technology company formed
by AT&T as part of AT&T's previously announced restructuring.
