LOS ANGELES -- Verizon Avenue, a wholly owned subsidiary of Verizon Communications, now offers high-speed Internet access and telephone service to more than 2,200 Southern California apartments and condominiums in five communities managed by E&S Ring Management.

"Verizon Avenue's approach provides residents with a no-hassle way to capitalize on the exciting capabilities of broadband, and property owners have another desirable feature that can help them attract and retain residents," said Bill Wallace, president of Verizon Avenue.

Verizon Avenue focuses solely on the multiple dwelling unit (MDU) market and develops telephony and high-speed Internet products and services designed to meet the unique needs of property owners and management companies.

Through agreements with real estate investment trusts and independent property owners, Verizon Avenue provides high-speed Internet service over regular copper phone lines at each property. Verizon Avenue installs digital subscriber line (DSL) equipment on site to connect residents to the Internet. Putting the equipment on premise enables every resident to receive high-speed Internet service over copper wire connections already serving the building or complex.

"Our properties attract residents with lifestyles that demand the best in amenities-such as high-speed Internet service," said John Pringle, president of E&S Ring Management. "Working with a nationally recognized provider like Verizon Avenue makes good strategic sense. Our customer service experience has exceeded expectations."

E&S Ring Management, an asset management company with diverse projects throughout Southern California, offers Verizon Avenue packages to its residential customers in a variety of combinations that include telephone, high-speed service, e-mail and personal Web space. There are five E&S Ring Management properties now benefiting from the full suite of Verizon Avenue. They include:

  • Rancho Los Feliz, 3205 Los Feliz Blvd, Los Angeles

  • L'Estancia, 4045 Vineland Ave., Studio City

  • Bar Harbor, 4242 Via Marina, Marina Del Rey

  • Mariner's Village, 4500 Via Marina, Marina Del Rey

  • Villa Vicente, 5351 San Vicente Blvd., Los Angeles

At most of their properties, E&S Ring Management chose to have Verizon Voyager services billed directly to their residents. However, at L'Estancia, 4045 Vineyard Ave. in Studio City, E&S Ring Management chose to take advantage of Verizon Avenue's "bulk" arrangement. Under this arrangement, owners contract with Verizon Avenue to deliver high-speed Internet service as a communications amenity to all residential units in the property (or a large block of units) at a volume rate. (Note: see sidebar for detailed service descriptions).

High-speed Internet service enables subscribers to transfer data, graphics, audio and video files at speeds considerably faster than a traditional 56K dial-up modem. Since the DSL Internet connection taps into unused frequencies on a telephone line, customers can use the same line to simultaneously make phone calls and access the Internet with one click. Once high-speed service is available in an apartment or condominium community, ordering and installation from Verizon Avenue typically takes a few business days. When the property has a bulk arrangement, high-speed service is available when the tenant moves in. Technical support is available seven days a week.

Verizon Avenue assigns a sales representative as the single point of contact for the property team. This representative assists the property team in informing all residents of the Verizon Avenue services available in the property. Verizon Avenue provides comprehensive marketing campaigns to announce the arrival of Verizon Avenue communications amenities to new properties and encourage all residents to sign up. These campaigns can include direct mail, special introductory offers, promotional materials and on-site events. In addition, brochures for new residents moving in outline the available programs and support ongoing resident acquisition campaigns.

Residents can sign up for Verizon Avenue's suite of services, including high-speed Internet service and telephone services, through the property management or leasing office.

Verizon Avenue also provides each property a branded and customized Community Network Web page which acts as a gateway to the Internet while offering residents the ability to post messages for other residents and make service requests online. Residents also have access to online tools for bill payment, service changes and trouble reporting.

Verizon Voyager is available at speeds ranging from 256 kilobits per second (Kbps) to 1.5 megabits per second (Mbps).

Downstream and upstream speeds are theoretical maximum connection speeds between the customer's computer and Verizon's DSL equipment. Actual connection speeds will vary from the maximum speeds and often will be lower. Throughput or download speeds refer to the speed at which data is transferred to a customer's computer from the Internet and are lower than connection speeds. Download speeds will differ based on numerous factors, including the condition of the phone line and inside wiring, network and Internet congestion, and the server and Web-site configurations of the Internet sites visited.

Verizon Avenue high-speed Internet access and phone service is now available in the Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. markets, with expansion planned to new cities.

Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) is one of the world's leading providers of communications services. Verizon companies are the largest providers of wireline and wireless communications in the United States, with 133.8 million access line equivalents and approximately 29.6 million wireless customers. Verizon is also the largest directory publisher in the world. With more than $67 billion in annual revenues and nearly 248,000 employees, Verizon's global presence extends to more than 40 countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
