MARION, Ohio -- Schools are calling for our support. And Verizon customers are answering by making some calls of their own -- long-distance calls, that is.
Verizon long-distance customers in Ohio contributed over $117,002 last year to their neighborhood schools through the company's "Extra Credit for Schools" program. Under the program, Verizon Long Distance makes a contribution -- equal to five percent of a customer's long-distance spending -- to a school designated by the customer when they sign up for the program.
Extra Credit for Schools is designed to benefit both public and private K-12 schools in the state. In the two years the program has been available in Ohio, 2,133 schools have participated.
Extra Credit for Schools is popular among Verizon long-distance customers in 46 states where the company has contributed more than $2.5 million to 24,000 schools since 1999. The donations are paid by Verizon Long Distance and cost customers nothing.
"We have great schools and great teachers in Ohio," said Todd Colquitt, president-Verizon Ohio. "Extra Credit for Schools offers consumers the opportunity to help their neighborhood schools without spending an extra dime.
"This is a no-strings-attached program for consumers," said Colquitt. "Verizon will make a donation to the school of their choice. Parents, grandparents and anyone who cares about the quality of our schools may participate."
Funds generated by the program have been used for reference materials, audiovisual equipment, calculators, art supplies, guest speakers, science work/study labs, computer hardware and software, playground equipment, globes and maps, English-as-a-second-language materials and Internet connections. Schools can spend the funds generated by the Verizon program in ways that will enrich the learning experience of their students.

New Verizon long-distance customers can enroll in the Verizon Extra Credit for Schools program online or by calling 1-877-X-CREDIT (1-877-927-3348). Current Verizon long-distance customers need to call the same toll-free number to add the program to their account.
