NEW YORK - Reflecting continued commitment to its customers, extensive network investments in the state and great work by company employees, Verizon today received four commendations from the New York Public Service Commission (PSC) for "excellent" service during 2002.

The PSC recognized Verizon for its operations on Long Island, in the Bronx, in Queens and in Northern Manhattan. The commendations are presented to local telephone companies when they exceed tough service standards for customer requests for repairs and customer complaints to the PSC.

"Our goal is to continue to hold the service quality edge in New York because, if we don't, our customers will turn elsewhere," said Paul A. Crotty, president of Verizon New York. "Today's commendations show our commitment to service is paying off."

The commendations for service excellence also reflect Verizon's investments in its New York telecommunications network over the last several years, Crotty said. Since 1995, the company has spent about $12 billion to improve and expand its network in the state, including a significant investment in new fiber-optic technology and "self-healing" systems designed to minimize customer service outages.

To earn a PSC commendation, a local phone company or a geographical division of a company must meet standards related to the number of repair requests per 100 phone lines and the rate of customer complaints to the PSC.

Over the last eight years, the rate of Verizon customer complaints statewide has been cut in half and the rate of customers requesting repairs, also known as trouble reports, has been reduced by a third.

Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) is one of the world's leading providers of communications services. Verizon is also the largest directory publisher in the world. With more than $67 billion in annual revenues and 229,500 employees, Verizon's global presence extends to more than 30 countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
