NORTH BROOKFIELD, Mass. -- Verizon customers here and in the neighboring town of Spencer will receive improved, more reliable service as a result of a $900,000 investment to upgrade and expand the capacity of the equipment in the company's two telephone offices in the communities.

The buildings house digital switches and state-of-the-art computers that route calls to their destinations and provide popular products ranging from voice mail to Call Intercept, which provides customers with flexibility in dealing with unidentified callers.

Verizon serves a total of about 15,500 phone lines from the North Brookfield and Spencer telephone offices.

The project, due to be completed by early May, also will provide more capacity for processing voice and data communications, meeting the rising demand for local and long-distance calling and Internet access. Surfing the Internet has changed the way customers use their telephones, increasing the average length of a call, which in turn requires more switching capacity.

"This project demonstrates Verizon's commitment to maintain state-of-the-art telecommunications services in rural areas as well as in major cities," said Donna Cupelo, region president, Verizon Massachusetts/Rhode Island.

The increased capacity coming to North Brookfield and Spencer is likely to prove particularly important in accommodating the growing popularity of Verizon long-distance service, which has been available in Massachusetts for about a year.

"From upgrading local switching centers to providing reasonably priced long-distance service, Verizon is helping consumers and businesses make progress every day, " said Cupelo.

Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) is one of the world's leading providers of communications services.
