Verizon Gives All New Yorkers Opportunity to Sample High-Speed Wi-Fi Internet Access for a Day

NEW YORK - On Sept. 25, Verizon will enable all New Yorkers to experience for one day what Verizon Online Internet access customers enjoy every day - free high-speed Wi-Fi (wireless) connections to the Internet at hundreds of Verizon HotSpots across the city.

Verizon has the most extensive Wi-Fi network in New York, with HotSpots at select public telephone locations across the city. The Verizon Wi-Fi service is already available free of charge to all Verizon Online customers with Wi-Fi compatible laptop computers, PDAs or pocket PCs. Verizon will offer the service free to the public all day on Sept. 25 as part of its sponsorship of Intel Corporation's "One Unwired Day" festival that will take place at the South Street Seaport, 12-14 Fulton St., beginning at 11 a.m.

One Verizon Online customer, Matthew Ingmire, uses his free Wi-Fi connection to increase his personal and professional productivity. In addition to working full-time for a major consulting firm, Ingmire is a candidate in New York University's Stern Executive MBA program. "I can always be connected at a Verizon Wi-Fi HotSpot - whether at home, at a neighborhood diner or near school," he said. "It's not only about productivity, but also quality of life. I don't have to be on campus or at the office anymore to do research or get work done. Getting free Wi-Fi with my DSL subscription puts Verizon ahead of other Internet service providers for me."

"We're excited about making the service available to the public for a day so that more people can experience for themselves the many benefits of high-speed, on-the-go Internet connections from Verizon."

From Sept. 22-25, Verizon's Wi-Fi on Wheels truck will visit various locations around the city to demonstrate Wi-Fi service. Visitors to the truck can use Wi-Fi to surf the Web, check e-mail and learn more about Verizon Online Internet access services.

Verizon has hundreds of HotSpots deployed in some of the city's most heavily trafficked locations, including the Upper East and Upper West Sides, Columbia University, Midtown, Union Square, Gramercy Park, Greenwich Village/New York University, Wall Street and Battery Park. Users can access a wireless high-speed Internet connection at up to 300 feet from Verizon HotSpots, which means customers can connect outdoors in places like parks, bus stops and public squares as well as indoors at certain locations near the HotSpots.
