LOS ANGELES - Verizon Communications, the national communications company formed by the merger of GTE and Bell Atlantic, will host a seminar on Sept. 28 to help smaller non-profit organizations compete for grants.

The free seminar will provide tips for writing effective grant proposals and other techniques community-based organizations can use to secure program funding. Smaller non-profit organizations are often at a disadvantage in the competition for government, foundation and corporation grants because they lack the expertise necessary to submit a winning grant proposal.

The seminar is available to non-profit organizations that have participated in or wish to participate in Verizon's public-education campaign to publicize the availability of Universal Lifeline Telephone Service (ULTS). ULTS is an affordable basic telephone service for individuals with limited income.

"Many community-based organizations throughout Verizon's service territory have partnered with us to help inform individuals with limited financial means about California's ULTS program and the benefits of having basic telephone service," said Timothy McCallion, Verizon's Pacific Regional President. "Verizon is committed to ensuring that all individuals have access to affordable basic telephone service and will continue its ULTS public awareness outreach campaign."

Verizon (then GTE) launched the campaign in 1995 with the support of community leaders and the goal of reaching a 95 percent subscriber rate. Verizon achieved that goal this year with the help of its partners and has now set a new subscriber target of 98 percent.

The seminar is a way for Verizon to assist those non-profit organizations that have contributed to the success of the ULTS education campaign, McCallion said.

The seminar will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on September 28 at the Long Beach Hilton, Two World Trade Center, Long Beach. Seminar registrants will receive a reference kit that contains a computer-based grant-writing template.

Community-based organizations that serve populations in Verizon service areas and that want to attend the seminar should call Isai Perez at Durazo Communications, (213) 239-6555, extension 201.
