New York City music- and dance-lovers are invited to head over to The Museum of the City of New York where Verizon is sponsoring The Speakeasy at 1220 Fifth Ave. every Wednesday until Aug. 18.

The Speakeasy summer series features live music and cocktails on the museum's Fifth Avenue Terrace.  The series is held in recognition of New York City's history during the 1920s, when thousands of speakeasy establishments opened for dancing, singing and entertainment.

In addition to the 1920s-themed after-work events, visitors can also view the museum's special exhibitions including the "America's Mayor: John Lindsay, and the reinvention of New York" exhibit, which takes a new look at the economic shifts, growing civil rights movements, opposition to the Vietnam War and other transformations that took place in New York during Lindsay's mayoralty.  Ticket information can be obtained by contacting the museum or from the museum's website, www.mcny.org.

"We're delighted to partner with this major museum, which delves into the rich history of our great city," said Sandy Wilson, Verizon director of government and external affairs in New York City. "These events provide opportunities for one-on-one interactions with Speakeasy participants, which can be great fun and very informative."

Susan Henshaw Jones, the Ronay Menschel Director of the Museum of the City of New York, said: "I am especially grateful to Verizon for providing funding in support of the Museum's Speakeasy 2010. Verizon has helped us welcome visitors on our Terrace overlooking Fifth Avenue on Wednesday evenings, enabling them to see exhibitions inside, including one on Prohibition-era New York, and enjoy a cocktail or two with old friends and new acquaintances.  It's a lot of fun,"
