DALLAS - based Verizon SuperPages will present a $15,000 grant to District 9 Councilmember Mary Poss and Library Director Ramiro Salazar at 10 a.m. on April 16 at the Casa View Branch Library, 10355 Ferguson Road to establish a literacy center at the Casa View Branch Library. The Verizon SuperPages Literacy Center provides a new literacy resource enabling the branch to better serve the growing needs of the local Spanish-speaking community. The latest census data indicates that approximately 80,000 people of Hispanic origin live within a five-mile radius of the Casa View Branch Library.

"Verizon's commitment to community service in awarding this grant enables us to expand services and provide our patrons with many opportunities that would not otherwise be available," said Director Salazar.

Lou Laste, director of community relations at Verizon SuperPages, will present the grant check at the special ceremony. "The center will be a tremendous resource to neighboring residents who want to learn to read and better their lives," Laste said.

The Literacy Center enables adults to begin learning to read, write, and speak English while they are on the waiting list for the popular English as a Second Language (ESL) class. In addition, the Literacy Center will supplement and enhance the skills of students currently enrolled in the ESL program.

Verizon Foundation's grant will be used to purchase library materials in English and Spanish and to purchase computer literacy software to support current ESL classes.
