Verizon Wireless 'Connects' Oakland County, Michigan Domestic Violence Victims With Help

50 Wireless Phones Donated to HAVEN through HopeLine Program

January 6, 2002

In an effort to provide domestic violence victims with added protection, Verizon Wireless has donated 50 phones with unlimited local calling and voicemail service to HAVEN, the Oakland County, Michigan-based domestic violence organization. The donation is part of Verizon Wireless' nationwide commitment to support domestic violence prevention and awareness.

In October 2001, Verizon Wireless nationally launched HopeLineSM, the company's exclusive phone recycling program that directly benefits victims of domestic violence. The company collects previously-owned wireless handsets to be refurbished, recycled and/or sold. Proceeds are then used to purchase handsets for victims.

"These phones enable victims to leave their homes or HAVEN knowing help is at their fingertips," said Wayne White, president of Verizon Wireless' Michigan Region. "Wireless resources and technology are a natural tool to help as an added line of defense because communication is so critical to someone in a violent domestic situation."

HAVEN has five locations throughout Oakland County, including one each in Southfield, Farmington Hills, Rochester Hills and two in Pontiac that will benefit from Verizon Wireless' HopeLine donation.

Hedy Nuriel, president/CEO of HAVEN said, "We are very thankful for Verizon Wireless' support. These donated phones often become life-saving tools for so many battered women who are fleeing for their lives."
