CHARLESTON, W.Va. - West Virginians love Verizon's Caller ID service so much that they are leading the nation, at least in states served by Verizon. Verizon, the country's largest telecommunications company, provides local phone services in 31 states from Maine to Hawaii and the District of Columbia.

"Caller ID has long been Verizon's flagship service, but the interest from West Virginia's customers far exceeds the national average," said Gale Given, president of Verizon West Virginia. "We know that customers like the control and convenience that Caller ID provides, but, frankly, we're puzzled about the key to Caller ID's immense popularity here. We're not complaining though."

At the end of May, 53 percent of Verizon's residential customers in the state had Caller ID service. The state with the next highest subscriber rate is neighboring Virginia, with 44 percent of residential customers taking the service. Nationally, about 28 percent of Verizon's residential customers subscribe to Caller ID.

Bell Atlantic, forerunner to Verizon, launched Caller ID in the Mountain State in 1990. Seven years later, West Virginia was the first state in Bell Atlantic's 13-state region to have a 30-pecent of residential customers subscribing to the service.

Caller ID with Name sells for $7.50 a month; the basic service, without name, sells for $6.95 a month. Caller ID boxes or phones with Caller ID displays, which are required to use the service, can be purchased from a variety of sources. Prices vary, depending on memory capacity and other features.

To order Caller ID, residential customers should call Verizon at 954-6200. Businesses should call 954-6202.
