Winners of Essay Contest to Visit Lake Placid As Part of NYNEX
Win At School Program

NEW YORK, NY -- Six junior high school students are bound
for Lake Placid, NY, this weekend (Feb. 2-5) for a full slate
of Olympic-style fun as a result of winning a NYNEX-sponsored
essay contest.

Essays by the six students won top prizes among entries from middle
schools that participated in the NYNEX Win At School Program.
As part of the program, US Olympic Luge team members visited the
schools last fall to talk about the rewards of hard work and dedication.
Afterward, students wrote essays describing how they or someone
they know overcame an obstacle to achieve something important.

Contest winners represented several areas from throughout the
Northeast: Boston, New York City, Buffalo, Syracuse, Burlington,
VT, and Portland, ME. In Lake Placid, the students will experience
firsthand the excitement of luge, bobsled, skating, and cross-country
and alpine skiing. In addition to the trips to Lake Placid for
the first-place winners, NYNEX provided runners-up in each city
with $200 savings bonds.

contest, with topics varying from overcoming life- threatening
diseases to achieving personal goals.
