NEW YORK, NY — For most New Yorkers, going to a Yankees game is a rite of passage. Walking through the ballpark's gates, eating a hot dog as you cheer on your favorite player and taking advantage of the 7th inning stretch are childhood memories that last forever. Unfortunately, the children who spend each night in the city's domestic violence shelters have childhood memories scarred by the violence they've experienced at home.
To give some of these children a few hours of carefree fun, Verizon Wireless is donating more than 200 New York Yankees tickets to Safe Horizon, formerly Victims Services. Safe Horizon already has distributed 90 tickets to Bronx Oasis and Jamaica Oasis, including 50 tickets given to children and their families for Mother's Day. The remaining tickets will be distributed to New York City children during June and August.
"To give these children just a few hours with their moms to enjoy a game and be regular kids is a great gift," said Allegra Perhaes, senior director of domestic violence programs at Safe Horizon. "We can provide the children with a bed and a meal, but a day at Yankee Stadium gives them something more, it gives them something good to remember."
Verizon Wireless also invites Yankee fans, young and old, to join in at the grand opening of its newest Communications Store, located at 57th Street and 7th Avenue. On May 22nd, 23rd and 24th, the company will give two Yankees tickets to each customer who activates a new line before 11 a.m. at any of the company's 44 retail stores and kiosks in the NY Metro area. Verizon Wireless is an official sponsor of The New York Yankees.
