WOBURN, MA — Verizon Wireless is helping football fans "make the call" at the September 9th season opening game between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The nation's leading wireless carrier has installed a mobile cell site at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts to handle the increased wireless call volume expected for Monday night's opening game and for potentially every home game throughout the rest of the football season.

The "cell on wheels" (COW), a fully functional, generator-powered mobile cell site, will be positioned to effectively double wireless capacity in the area. The COW has the same call capacity as a freestanding cell site and can handle both voice and wireless data service.

"With the number of fans and supporters converging on Foxboro, there is the potential for a significant increase in wireless activity over what we would normally see in this area," said Margaret Salemi, Verizon Wireless' network director of system performance for New England.

The Verizon Wireless COW has been used during racing events at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire, the Greater Hartford Open in Hartford, Connecticut, and whenever Verizon Wireless has to rebuild or upgrade an existing cell site. Verizon Wireless installed similar mobile cell sites at the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, at the Republican Convention in Philadelphia and at the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
