ORANGEBURG, NY — Consumers who plan to give the gift of wireless this holiday season, can double that gift by bringing their old wireless phones to Verizon Wireless Communications Stores throughout the New York Metro area and donating it to the company's HopeLine® phone recycling program.
HopeLine collects wireless phones and accessories in any condition from any wireless service provider, and then refurbishes or recycles them in an environmentally-sound way. Proceeds from the HopeLine program benefit local domestic violence survivors by providing wireless phones and service to victims, and financial grants to groups fighting to end the violence.
"HopeLine provides all of us with an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of families who have the right to feel safe at home during the holidays and all year long." said Charles Hand, president of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro region. "Donating your old phone to HopeLine could be the most valuable gift you give this holiday season."
A recognized corporate leader for its commitment to preventing domestic violence and raising awareness of the issue, Verizon Wireless was the first wireless carrier in the nation to collect and recycle old cell phones and has done so since January 1999. Nationally, the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program has collected nearly 4 million wireless phones, and given more than $4 million in cash grants and more than 45,000 phones with airtime to domestic violence prevention organizations.
"Many of us take our cell phones for granted," said Commissioner Yolanda Jimenez of the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence in New York City. "But for a woman who is being stalked or chased, it may be her first line of defense."
In addition to a successful phone recycling program and funding for domestic violence prevention organizations, HopeLine includes free voice mailboxes for survivors, community and corporate awareness initiatives, and a bilingual "Invest in Yourself" program designed to help survivors re-enter the workforce.
Wireless phones and accessories from any carrier can be donated at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store throughout New York and Northern New Jersey and across the nation.
