2014 Data Breach Investigations Report to Represent Data from Nearly 50 Contributors

Verizon announced yesterday (Feb. 25) at its annual RSA Conference reception that the 2014 Data Breach Investigations Report will feature contributions from nearly 50 organizations –both public and private—and 95 countries as it readies its annual report on cybersecurity, nearly tripling the number of contributing organizations to the 2013 report. This is up from 19 contributors representing 27 countries in last year’s report. A complete list of the 2014 report contributors follows below.

“The most disturbing trend we are seeing among the data is that hackers are getting better at their jobs and the security community is not improving fast enough to keep up in the fight against cybercrime,” said Wade Baker, managing principal for the RISK team, as he pointed to two trend lines that were growing farther and farther apart over the past decade.

“It will be interesting to see what the full report shows, as we are still writing its content,” he stated.

“We have been collecting data now for a decade, having published our first report in 2008 that included four years’ worth of data,” said Baker, who expects that this year’s more complete dataset will continue to reveal interesting findings that are aimed at helping organizations better defend against cyberthreats.

In other updates, Baker indicated that the 2014 DBIR will be reformatted this year to enhance ease of use. For example, Baker pointed out that this year’s report will feature more specific recommendations for each pattern of incident and that in general the data should provide more actionable decision support information to public and private organizations.
