LONDON, ENGLAND (May 15, 1997) WorldCom, Inc.
(Nasdaq/NM:WCOM) Gemini Submarine Cable System Ltd (Gemini) announced
today the successful installation in Porthcurno, Cornwall of the UK
landing stage of the southern route of its dual cable transatlantic
system. The actual undersea portion will begin after the US landing
stage in Manasquan, New Jersey is completed in July. The installation
of the southern route - from New York to London - is anticipated by
November 1997 and capacity will be available by the end of this year.
Installation of the northern route of the system will commence during
the fourth quarter of this year and will be completed in 1998.
Gemini is a joint venture between Cable & Wireless and
WorldCom, Inc. Gemini is building and will operate a new class of
intercontinental fiber-optic cable system between the major cities in
the US and the UK. The 20 gigabit system, comprised of multiple SDH
loops, will provide capacity between New York and London.
Traditionally cable systems have been limited in their capability by
only providing capacity from beachhead to beachhead.
"The Gemini project makes 1997 as significant a date as 1858
when the first transatlantic cable was installed and 1988 when the
first transatlantic fiber-optic cable system was installed,"
said Jeremy Thompson, managing director of Gemini Submarine Cable
System Ltd. "Gemini itself will effectively double the capacity
available on fiber-optic cables across the Atlantic. It demonstrates
WorldCom's and Cable & Wireless' commitment to providing
the broadband capacity necessary for the information age."
