Global Roaming, Hosting and Partner Programs Now Available
INnet nv today announced the completion of its integration with UUNET Technologies, the world's largest Internet service provider (ISP), and a subsidiary of WorldCom Inc. The integration will allow the company, which will now operate as UUNET Belgium, to offer a wide range of services including global roaming, web hosting and reseller partner programs. In August 1996, UUNET became the majority shareholder of UUNET Belgium.
"The UUNET? network is the largest and most powerful Internet backbone in the world," said Luc Dierckx, managing director, UUNET Belgium. " This integration has important implications for the technical and financial structure of our company and positions us as a leader in global Internet services."
For example, the capacity of the direct connection from UUNET Belgium' national network to the UUNET backbone will initially be 8 Mbps. The backbone's total transatlantic capacity today is approximately 100 Mbps. In addition, a 2 Mbps satellite link will be used for faster news delivery.
"Demand for Internet bandwidth in Belgium doubles every six months," said Dierckx. "Now that our network is fully integrated into the worldwide UUNET backbone, we can proactively meet this need. In addition, as the demand for bandwidth grows, WorldCom's Pan-European fiber optic network will help us to stay ahead of demand."
The integration process has allowed UUNET Belgium to offer a variety of new products and services to its customers including global roaming, worldwide web hosting and international partner programs.
Global Roaming
The global roaming dial-up service enables UUNET Belgium customers local call access to hundreds of cities worldwide. "Business users have increasingly demanded full Internet access while traveling abroad," said Marc Van Aken, marketing director, UUNET Belgium. "UUNET's global network puts us in a unique position to offer this sought after service. "
Worldwide Web Hosting
UUNET Belgium also offers customers a wide range of Web services built on Microsoft's NT? Server 4.0, which provides built-in web services, and the Microsoft? BackOffice family of applications. These services include dedicated Web hosting and database hosting, as well as development and management tools.
Other Web hosting features include the Microsoft FrontPage Web authoring and management tool, for creating and managing Web sites, and Microsoft Index Server, a content indexing and querying search engine. For customers who want to augment their Web site with a back-end database, UUNET Belgium offers relational database hosting with Microsoft's SQL Server TM.
In addition, web hosting customers now have the ability to host web sites at multiple locations around the world. This feature results in "one-stop shopping" for global hosting services and allows UUNET customers with a common hardware platform and software configuration to receive hosting in multiple international locations.
UUNET Belgium reduces the complexities of implementing and supporting a Web site by providing a complete solution, including hardware, software, high-speed Internet connectivity, and on-going management and reporting. Web sites hosted at UUNET's state-of-the-art computer facilities are directly connected to the Internet, ensuring superior performance, high reliability and a secure hosting environment.
International Partner Programs
The UUNET Belgium partner program is currently available to resellers and to companies that want to become Virtual Internet Providers (VIPs) and resell access to the Internet under their own name.
Underlining WorldCom's growing presence in Belgium, was an announcement today that the company would be the first to provide facilities-based competitive telecommunications services in Brussels as a result of a 50-50 joint venture with Coditel S.A., a Brussels-based CATV company.
