4 Things to Consider When Adopting Internet of Things (IoT) Technology

The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way enterprise businesses engage with, implement and control technology. So it’s no surprise that strategic partnerships are being formed to use the power of 4G networks and cloud platforms to enhance machine-to-machine (M2M) strategies, services and wireless device connectivity.

Verizon Enterprise Solutions and GE, last week, announced a collaboration to deliver a range of value-added services for GE's Predix platform, including remote monitoring, diagnostics and the ability to resolve maintenance issues virtually anywhere in the world. Mark Bartolomeo, head of IoT Connected Solutions at Verizon, sat down with GE's Ideas Lab to discuss the how technology pioneers are succeeding with M2M technologies, the importance of a 4G wireless infrastructure and what markets make the most sense for IoT adoption.

Here are 4 key takeaways from the interview:

  1. The wireless network makes the Industrial Internet viable — it just doesn’t work unless enterprises are connected to a high-speed network.
  2. Sustainability can provide a sizeable ROI for IoT technologies, including energy consumption, generation and theft monitoring; lowering carbon footprint by reducing vehicle fleet, etc.
  3. IoT frontrunners are benefiting from accelerated products cycles, new revenue streams and more reliable outcomes.
  4. Fragmentation and a lack of standards are the two biggest hurdles currently hindering widespread IoT adoption. However, as more businesses embrace and implement advanced cloud services, stronger security strategies and high-speed wireless for M2M connectivity, IoT technology will increasingly gain global acceptance.
