MCI acquires full ownership of Belgian Joint Venture

Positions MCI as Single-Source IP, Data and Voice Services Provider
to Business Customers in Belgium and Luxembourg

ASHBURN, Va., 8 July 2004 - MCI (MCIA.PK) today announced that it has completed its acquisition of the 50 percent share of its Belgian joint venture, MCI Belgium-Luxembourg, formerly held by Blomhof SA/NV (SUEZ and Ackermans & van Haaren) following approval by the Belgian Competition Council.

The transaction will allow MCI to combine the operations of its UUNET subsidiary in Belgium and Luxembourg with those of the former MCI Belgium-Luxembourg joint venture. The new combined company will offer businesses in both countries - as well as multinational corporations with operations in Belgium and Luxembourg - the simplicity of dealing with a single-source provider for all their IP, data and voice communications requirements with complete customer service and technical support across all products and services.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

UUNET is a wholly-owned subsidiary of MCI and a leading provider of Internet services to business customers in Belgium and Luxembourg. MCI Belgium-Luxembourg is the major alternative telecom operator, providing voice and data services to business customers in Belgium and Luxembourg.
