Company to Provide Free Long-Distance Calling May 9-12
ASHBURN, Va. May 9, 2003 - In honor of Mother's Day, MCI is providing free long distance telephone calls to the United States for military personnel in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard stationed abroad. The holiday calling program, provided by MCI and the Armed Forces Military Radio Affiliate Systems (MARS), is available May 9-12.
"When you are far from home there is nothing more comforting than the sound of a familiar voice," said Jerry Edgerton, senior vice president of MCI Government and Outsourcer Markets. "MCI is proud to support the men and women defending our country and to bring military families, friends and loved ones together over Mother's Day weekend."
By using short-wave radio equipment staffed by MARS operators around the world, military service personnel are able to communicate with friends and family members in the United States. Using a single channel radio, military personnel contact one of the 33 designated MARS stations in the United States. The MARS operators will contact the military member's family and friends in the U.S. and connect the two parties using MCI's long distance network.
MARS, founded more than 45 years ago, consists of approximately 8,000 volunteer civilian amateur radio operators and volunteer military members at military bases and aboard ships.
