SYDNEY - 1st April 1998
WorldCom, one of the world's fastest growing telecommunications companies, has been granted a Carrier Licence by the Australian Federal Government.
The announcement signals WorldCom's entry into Australia's deregulated telecommunications market with a wide range of innovative communications products and services.
WorldCom is concentrating its efforts in the short term on the Sydney business market. The licence allows WorldCom to provide its full range of voice, data and Internet services to customers.
WorldCom Australia's Managing Director, Ms. Suzanne Campbell, said the granting of the carrier licence was the first step in the roll out of the company's substantial investment in telecommunications infrastructure and services for Australian consumers.
"The full impact of our commitment to the Australian market will be outlined in our Industry Development Plan which we will release in the next few weeks. The plan outlines the suite of leading edge services that we will roll out over the coming months.
"I applaud the Government and the Australian Communications Authority for processing our Carrier Licence application so rapidly. By deregulating the Australian telecommunications market the Australian Government aims to create more efficient and cost-effective telecommunications services. It is also the key to the development of a range of new and innovative services aimed at specific market sectors," said Ms Campbell.
