MCI WorldCom Chosen To Upgrade Delta Air Lines' Data Communications Network
Multi-million Dollar Contract Includes 28 Major Airport
Locations Nationwide
ATLANTA, April 13, 1999 --
MCI WorldCom today announced it has been selected as a primary vendor
to upgrade Delta Air Lines' data communications network by
providing ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) and frame relay solutions in
28 locations nationwide. The three-year, multi-million dollar contract
is just Phase One of Delta's larger Airport Renewal Project. Delta
plans to upgrade 100 additional sites over the next two years.
MCI WorldCom's ATM and frame applications will help Delta
expedite certain automated services involving large amounts of data
including passenger check-in and boarding, credit card verification,
baggage management and communications integration. ATM is the first
technology to effectively integrate voice, data and video over the same
communications channel at a variety of speeds.
"MCI WorldCom's pricing and proven technology were critical
factors in our selection of a communications provider for this
important initiative," said Paul Millard, vice president of
engineering for Delta Technology Inc., the wholly owned information
technology subsidiary of Delta Air Lines. "A faster flow of
information will reduce waiting from the ticket counter to baggage
claim, improving the customer's overall travel experience, a major
priority for Delta."
In addition to data communications, MCI WorldCom provides Delta Air
Lines with toll-free, conferencing and paging services.
"Delta Air Lines' proactive investment to upgrade
technology and avoid outages demonstrates their ongoing commitment to
customer care," said Vince Corica, senior vice president, MCI
WorldCom Global Accounts, East Region. "We share Delta's goal
to provide passengers with faster, more responsive service and look
forward to helping deliver on that commitment with this data network
enhancement."
