MCI WorldCom Conferencing Announces New Services To Improve Virtual Meetings
Meeting View, Instant Meeting Help Boost Meeting Control and
Convenience
ANAHEIM, Calif., November 3, 1999-Corporate America is going
virtual-and leading the way is conferencing technology that provides
new, efficient ways to meet and conduct business. Armed with a full
range of conferencing products and services for all meeting types, MCI
WorldCom Conferencing today announces two new features to round out its
offerings: Meeting View and Instant Meeting, book-end services that
provide a suite of new capabilities for fully managed special events as
well as everyday conferences.
"Meetings come in all shapes and sizes, from last-minute staff
meetings to highly planned investor relations calls," said Tim
Reedy, vice president, Finance and Marketing, MCI WorldCom
Conferencing. "We recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all
solution and that's why we offer customers a broad range of support
to suit their meeting needs. Meeting View and Instant Meeting provide
assistance at both ends of the meeting spectrum."
For added control of large-event audioconferences, Meeting View
provides a real-time look at the call's status using a Web
interface. The host and up to three other designated call leaders can
view a list of as many as 150 participants, including the line status
of each. In addition they can manage question-and-answer sessions and
access polling results. A chat feature allows call leaders to interact
with one another and the conference coordinator. Available at no extra
charge with Premier-level calls, Meeting View is ideal for large,
highly visible meetings, such as news conferences or investor relations
calls. No special software is needed to use Meeting View; it requires
only a standard, Java-enabled Internet browser. Meeting View will be
commercially available by November 8, 1999.
With Instant Meeting, a new "reservationless conferencing"
capability, professionals can conduct everyday audioconference meetings
at a moment's notice. Instant Meeting offers the convenience of
instantaneous conference calls. Subscribers can request a toll-free
number, a toll number or an MCI WorldCom On-Net Services number for
access. They are also provided two levels of security with a conference
leader passcode and a participant passcode. This gives them access to a
dedicated conference call line 24 hours a day, for up to 100 ports.
Instant Meeting is ideal for recurring client meetings, urgent
last-minute meetings and regular staff meetings. The service is
expected to be commercially available by February 2000.
"Because conferencing technology is readily available and so
easy to use, more people are incorporating it into their daily business
routines. According to Telespan Publishing Corporation, conference
calls are growing 35 percent worldwide," said Reedy.
"Combined with the massive reach of the Internet, conferencing
will become even more vital to businesses."
In fact, a recent study* on the Web usage of nearly 300
technology-savvy business professionals showed that American businesses
are rapidly embracing the Internet as a tool to facilitate
communication, collaborate with others and improve productivity. More
than half of the respondents said the Internet is central to their
companies' daily business practices; only 13 percent said their
company limits or discourages Internet use.
To enable business professionals to further harness the Web's
power as a forum for business meetings, MCI WorldCom Conferencing
offers a full range of e-meeting services to help businesses improve
communication. Recently the company enhanced its award-winning Net
Conferencing service, a Web-based tool that brings people together from
multiple, far-flung locations in a virtual environment. In addition,
professionals can schedule meetings with the click of a mouse button
with Online Reservation System (ORS), a new service that enables
participants to register for an audio, video or net conference almost
instantaneously via the MCI WorldCom Conferencing Web site.

*"The Internet's Impact on Business Productivity and
Individual Work Habits" survey was conducted on behalf of MCI
WorldCom Conferencing by Socratic Technologies, Inc., a market research
consultancy that specializes in interactive market research such as
Web-based surveys and usability studies. The sample was drawn from
Socratic Technologies' Socratic ForumÒ registered database of
persons, resulting in a total of 281 qualified respondents during a
10-day period in June 1999. This study is a follow up to MCI WorldCom
Conferencing's 1998 "Meetings in America" study, which
took a comprehensive look at trends, costs and attitudes toward
business travel and meeting habits. Find both reports in their entirety
