$1 Billion, Single-Focused Unit Combines Global Managed
Services and Account Management
CLINTON, MS, July 1, 1999 -- MCI WorldCom today announced the
creation of Global Solutions, a new unit to manage its $1 billion
business providing integrated network design, construction and
maintenance to the world's largest corporations.
Anthony Russo, an MCI WorldCom telecom veteran, will lead the unit,
which is an integral part of MCI WorldCom's Global Accounts
business division. Headquartered in McLean, Va., the solutions unit is
backed by a multinational staff of 2,000 sales and support
professionals around the world.
On day one of its operations MCI WorldCom Global Solutions is one of
the world's largest telecommunications solutions providers.
Existing customers include NASDAQ, GE Information Services and Sea-Land
Service Inc. Global Solutions today provides outsourcing services to
350 multinational customers who have tasked MCI WorldCom to build,
operate, monitor and maintain their worldwide telecommunication
facilities.
Global Solutions manages complex telecommunications elements on an
end-to-end basis for it clients. It designs and administers
enterprise-wide networks and delivers a full range of turnkey services.
Among the unit's capabilities are network solutions that
incorporate planning, implementation and compliance, as well as
on-going maintenance to optimize the performance of a customer's
global telecommunications links. The group also installs and manages
the PBXs, Internet routers and other equipment used in sophisticated
voice, data and Internet networks.
"Large companies are finding it makes sense to turn all their
telecommunications needs over to us," said Russo. "That way,
they can focus on their core business and rely on MCI WorldCom to
operate as their dedicated telecommunications department."
Global Solutions is an integral part of MCI WorldCom's Global
Accounts unit, headed by President Bob Hartnett. Global Accounts
operates as a one-stop-shop for 1,100 identified global customers.
"Whether in New York, London or Tokyo, multinational customers
look for consistency, dependability and network services that are the
same everywhere," said Hartnett. "Our Global Account teams
are under a single management structure, which allows us to provide
unparalleled focus on the distinctive needs of the multinational
company in the global marketplace," he added.
Global Account customers are serviced by a single account team
worldwide providing coordinated account management, and enterprise-wide
contracting and discounting. Together with its local-to-global-to-local
On-Net strategy and network reach, MCI WorldCom is the only carrier
that can provide the powerful combination of highly customized
solutions executed on a seamless basis around the globe.
"MCI WorldCom's global telecommunications focus and
strategy coupled with its significant levels of investment were major
factors in our decision to choose MCI WorldCom," said Jim Macioce,
vice president, global client operations, GE Information Services.
"We are making steady progress in integrating our networks. We
continue to work closely to keep GE Information Services critical
electronic commerce client information flowing at the highest level of
quality."
"On a typical billion-share day, the electronic trading network
that MCI WorldCom built and maintains for Nasdaq manages 500 million to
1 billion data packets guaranteeing 100 percent delivery of each packet
on a simultaneous basis to Nasdaq work stations around the
country," said Gregor Bailar, chief information office for the
National Association of Securities Dealers -- the parent of the Nasdaq
Stock Market, Inc. "With this sophisticated trading model, built
on the state-of-the-art technologies, we've set the bar for all
other U.S. trading markets with connections to 8,000 brokers and the
capacity to handle massive volumes to the benefit of the entire U.S.
economy."
MCI WorldCom's end-to-end ownership and operation of facilities
around the world enables it to provide service unimpeded by the
conflicts, revenue squabbles and account control bickering inherent in
even the best joint venture operations.
"The rollout of MCI WorldCom's global support program
radically changes the account and service delivery paradigm from the
more loosely structured models in place with global telecommunications
alliances today," Hartnett said. "Multinational customers
traditionally have dealt with a mix of telecommunications service
providers and national carriers that often were difficult to manage and
coordinate on a global basis."
MCI WorldCom is a global leader in communications services with 1998
revenue of more than $30 billion and established operations in over 65
countries encompassing in the Americas, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific
regions. MCI WorldCom is a premier provider of facilities-based and
fully integrated local, long distance, international and Internet
services. MCI WorldCom's global networks, including its
state-of-the-art Pan-European network and transoceanic cable systems
provide end-to-end high-capacity connectivity to more than 40,000
buildings worldwide. MCI WorldCom is traded on NASDAQ under WCOM. For
