Platform as a Service (PaaS) is changing the way enterprise businesses manage and execute their IT strategies and the underlying core technology is only gaining momentum as it continues to mature. In fact, PaaS is growing more than 25 percent year over year, according to recent analysis by IDC, and many Verizon cloud customers are deploying PaaS projects.
Platform as a Service can improve the enterprise IT ecosystem by reducing the complexity of deploying software, and it has proven to be a powerful enabler of development teams.
Here are four ways Platform as a Service technology helps developers in traditional IT organizations succeed:
- Speed. Taking away the need for cloud configuration means developers can move to cloud more quickly, without worrying about the infrastructure. PaaS automatically simplifies the deployment infrastructure required for cloud native applications. PaaS services are pre-configured and available instantly, and because the processes are automated the IT environments are always consistent.
- Experimentation. PaaS controls the cost of development by automating the infrastructure, so teams can experiment with new applications that directly drive results. Developers can quickly deliver proof-of-concept demos to line-of-business managers. This creates a new culture of teamwork while reducing risk.
- Flexibility. Not every application should run on a public cloud, because many customers have unique compliance and security requirements. An application built using PaaS can be deployed on containers that can be efficiently moved to any infrastructure — cloud, dedicated hardware or a managed hosting site. Developers can build a new application on a development ecosystem and then move it to the best infrastructure for that application. Additionally, applications can move as the infrastructure changes.
- Cost. Many PaaS solutions (i.e., Cloud Foundry) are open source, allowing customers to manage costs associated with proprietary software. For example, PaaS is often a key component for big data solutions. Many of enterprises are using PaaS specifically for big data projects.
It’s been said that all enterprises are now software companies. That’s closer to the truth than you’d think. Many products like automobiles, appliances and consumer goods are now software platforms for delivering unique services. Platform as a Service helps reduce the time to market, increasing innovation and closely links the technical teams to the business teams. It also helps reduce the overall costs of IT by allowing enterprises to experiment with open source software when appropriate. Most importantly, it empowers developers to be creative, improves the quality of new software and helps enterprises thrive.
