ARLINGTON, Va. -- Wanted: Entry-level and experienced personnel for
competitive, fast-paced, growing business. Job requirements vary.
Skilled telecommunications technicians especially needed. Call the
Bell Atlantic Jobline, 1-800-617-JOBS, ext. BELL.
Bell Atlantic's local telephone companies are putting out the word:
they're looking for candidates for jobs of all kinds. They've
established a toll-free jobline to handle calls from around the
mid-Atlantic region.
"Competition in the telecommunications industry has put a premium on
skilled workers," said Nell Rivers, director-staffing, Bell Atlantic
Network Services, Inc. "It's also changing the way we hire. Today, we
need to attract, screen and hire employees faster than we've had to in
the past."
The jobline will help the Bell Atlantic telephone companies establish
a pool of interested applicants who can be considered for openings
when they occur. When people call, they will be asked whether their
interest is in technical, sales, service or clerical jobs.
Individuals will be screened to see if their qualifications match any
current openings. If they have the skills and experience necessary,
they will be considered for available positions.
If no current openings match their qualifications, they will be added
to a database for the job titles that fit their interests, experience
and skills. When openings in those job titles occur, they will be
considered for those positions.
Currently, there's a shortage of skilled technical people to fill jobs
in Washington, D.C.; northern Virginia, and western and southern
Maryland, according to Rivers. Applicants are especially needed for
positions as cable splicing technicians, services technicians, systems
technicians and central office technicians. These jobs involve the
installation and maintenance of telecommunications facilities, wiring
and systems.
In addition, experienced sales/service consultants are needed for:
- part-time positions in Bell Atlantic-Maryland's 24-hour-a-day
residential call center in Beltsville,
- full-time positions in Bell Atlantic-New Jersey's residence sales
and service centers in Teaneck and Elizabeth. The positions in
Elizabeth are for individuals who are bilingual English/Spanish).
- full-time positions in residence sales and service centers
throughout Bell Atlantic's mid-Atlantic region.
Sales/service consultants take orders from consumers for local
telephone service, answer billing inquiries and sell Bell Atlantic
products and services.
The toll-free number for the Bell Atlantic Jobline is 1-800-617-JOBS
(5627), ext. BELL. It operates 8 a.m. to midnight seven days a week.
