Remaining Telephone Exchanges on Long Island to Begin '1' + Ten-Digit Dialing for Calls Between Area Codes

NEW YORK - Starting Nov. 1, callers in 56 telephone exchanges on Long Island will need to dial "1" plus the area code and seven-digit number for all calls they make between the 631 and 516 area codes. Telephone customers in other exchanges on Long Island have been dialing in this manner since the 516 area code was split last year to create the new 631 code.

At the time of the split, the New York State Public Service Commission delayed the introduction of the new dialing pattern in the 56 exchanges to give alarm companies additional time to reprogram customer alarm systems as a result of the new 631 area code.

During the grace period, local calls between the affected number exchanges in the 516 and 631 area codes still could be completed by dialing only seven digits.

Starting Nov. 1, callers must dial "1," plus the area code, and then the seven-digit telephone number to call outside their own area code. Callers dialing from outside Suffolk County to anywhere inside the county will have to dial "1," plus the 631 area code, and then the seven-digit telephone number. Likewise, callers from outside Nassau County, who are trying to reach someone in Nassau County will have to dial "1," plus the 516 area code, and then the seven-digit telephone number.

Callers in 631 or 516 who want to reach someone in their own area code need only dial the seven-digit telephone number.

The affected exchanges are:
• In the 516 area code: 294, 333, 338, 379, 433, 479*, 671, 681, 741, 752*, 756*, 873, 876, 931, 932, 937, 938, 942, and 997.

• In the 631 area code: 207, 232, 234, 271, 289, 321, 342, 351, 385, 421, 423, 424, 425, 427, 447, 475, 479*, 547, 582, 585, 588, 591, 654, 665, 666, 673, 689, 696, 727, 736, 737, 738, 751, 752*, 756*, 758, and 842.

The new dialing process for the 56 exchanges will not affect rates or local calling on Long Island. Local calls will still be local calls. Charges for calls to 411 (Verizon Directory Assistance Service) will remain the same, as will calls to 911 emergency services.

Verizon has informed Long Island customers about the end of the grace period through notices placed in September bills, the Verizon Web site (www.verizon.com), and toll-free recordings (1-800-322-3558 in English, 1-800-882-7818 in Spanish and 1-800-299-2630 for TTY).
