"My mother and I try to talk every Sunday morning, no matter where I am. But the call I make this Sunday will be special, because I'll be one of three daughters calling to say 'Happy Mother's Day,'" Hawthorne says.
This Mother's Day, Verizon expects to handle 450 million calls, up six to seven percent over a normal Sunday when the Verizon network handles roughly 407 million calls. Last Mother's Day, Verizon processed more than 433 million calls.
In addition, 2,450 Verizon LiveSource operators -- 8 percent more than a normal Sunday -- will be on duty in 59 call centers, helping handle more than 2.2 million directory assistance and operator-assisted calls. Local managers intend to acknowledge Verizon's working mothers on duty on "their" day.
"And what would your mother like most to hear from you? Although it may sound trite, I believe that telling your mom 'I love you' is the most important thing you can say. Some people find it hard to say these words -- but do it now, while you still have the chance. If you are separated by miles, a simple 'I miss you' can also mean a lot to your mom," Hawthorne says.
"How fortunate we are to live in a time when technology allows us to stay connected with the people we love. To be able easily to pick up a phone on Mother's Day to call our moms is one of today's best blessings," Hawthorne says.
The Chicken Soup series of books, offering real-life anecdotes and inspired observations on life, have been phenomenally successful, with over 60 million copies sold to date. At one time or another, there have been at least eight Chicken Soup for the Soul® titles simultaneously in the top fifty on the USA Today best-selling books list. The publishers also hold the record for having the most books on The New York Times bestseller list at one time, seven books on May 24, 1998.
According to Hawthorne, "Most of us are smart enough to realize that we can never repay our mothers for the gifts they have given us. So let her know how you feel. As Abraham Lincoln said, 'All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my mother.'"
