NEW YORK -- Verizon customers in Queens will receive improved, more reliable phone service as the result of a $500,000 investment the company is making in new electronic equipment.

Verizon will install the new equipment later this year at its Long Island City, Jackson Heights, Woodside, Flushing and Jamaica facilities to increase reliability and capacity in the company's telecommunications network.

The equipment will enhance Verizon's SONET (synchronous optical network) technology, which enables businesses to transmit data at very high speeds. SONET rings also provide multiple routes for voice and data services and are self-healing, automatically rerouting telecommunications transmissions to bypass a problem in the event of a service disruption.

In addition, Verizon continues to install fiber-optic cable and other advanced telecommunications equipment throughout the Empire State. Fiber-optic technology uses hair-thin glass fibers and digital technology to deliver high-quality telephone service along with sophisticated data communications services. At the end of 2002, the company had deployed more than 70,000 fiber miles in New York, bringing the total statewide to 1.25 million fiber miles, and invested $1.5 billion to ensure New Yorkers have the best communications services available.

"Verizon is the only telecommunications company in New York committed to substantial levels of investment in its network," said Paul Crotty, Verizon New York and Connecticut Group president.

In addition to deploying the latest technology, Verizon New York offers a complete range of telecommunication services, including local, regional, and long-distance calling, as well as high-speed data and Internet and wireless services. The company's Veriations plans deliver unmeasured, unlimited direct-dialed local, regional and long-distance calling, the convenience of one bill and attractive discounts when customers subscribe to other services.

"The level of improved service in New York today is unprecedented," said Crotty. Verizon customers are benefiting from our package plans and the latest in technology upgrades to our network."

Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) is one of the world's leading providers of communications services. Verizon companies are the largest providers of wireline and wireless communications in the United States, with 135.8 million access line equivalents and 32.5 million Verizon Wireless customers. Verizon is also the largest directory publisher in the world. With more than $67 billion in annual revenues and 229,500 employees, Verizon's global presence extends to more than 30 countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
