UUNET Continues Internet Data Center Build-Out With Two New Facilities In New York City

New NYC data centers offer colocation Web hosting services to meet growing demand for hosting Intranets, Extranets and Internet web sites

ASHBURN, VA., May 1, 2000 - UUNET, an MCI WorldCom Company and a recognized leader in Web hosting, today announced the opening of two new Internet data centers in New York City bringing the total number of data centers online to 13 worldwide. The new data centers will offer businesses enhanced colocation hosting services that deliver the performance and security necessary to run business-critical applications over the World Wide Web.

As part of its UUhost

SM Data Center build-out initially announced last year, UUNET's New York City data centers, located in Carteret, New Jersey and Elmsford, New York, will help to meet the growing demand for colocation services in the New York City metropolitan area.

According to Yankee Group Senior Director Eric Hindin, "Despite numerous announcements from service providers and carriers, hosting and colocation space is still in short supply. In the Northeast, space is virtually sold out; the demand for colocation space is far exceeding the supply. Already a leading hosting company, UUNET continues to deliver on its strategy to build-out data centers that will meet the increasing demand for colo services especially in major markets."

"Our New York City data centers will provide our hosting customers in the Northeast with superior colocation services," said Mark Spagnolo, president and CEO of UUNET. "Because UUNET's data centers are directly integrated into our award-winning global IP network, businesses can quickly and efficiently upgrade and enhance their Web services and applications."

The New York area data center openings follow the launch of the company's Atlanta, Georgia data center which opened earlier this year. Throughout 2000, UUNET plans to open Internet Data Centers in Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and a second site in Washington, D.C. The company also operates UUhost data centers in San Jose, California; Washington, D.C.; Paris, France; London, England; Manchester, England; Brussels, Belgium; Dortmund, Germany; Amsterdam; Stockholm, Sweden; and Sydney, Australia. By year's end, the company is scheduled to have 18 Internet data centers online worldwide.

The New York City data centers are directly integrated into UUNET's OC-48 backbone, offering hosting customers high bandwidth availability for maximum performance and quick scalability. In March, UUNET also announced plans to deploy OC-192 with Multi-Protocol Label Switching in its U.S. network, quadrupling the company's current network speed to 10 Gigabits per second.

UUhost Data Center facilities offer businesses unparalleled technical advantages including direct access to UUNET's global IP network, maximum bandwidth flexibility through a Gigabit Ethernet LAN infrastructure and continuity of electrical power to the data center through an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), backed by a diesel generator.
