UUNET UK EASES THE WAY TO COST EFFECTIVE ISDN INTERNET ACCESS

New UUNET Messenger ISDN service to be sold exclusively through resellers. UUNET UK, part of the world's leading Internet services company and a subsidiary of WorldCom, Inc., today announced UUNET Messenger ISDN, an ISDN-based Internet access service designed to be the easiest to install and aimed at small to medium enterprises (SMEs). It offers a highly cost effective and higher performance access to the Internet via ISDN than that provided by the multiple dial-up analogue services still used by many SMEs in the UK. This new service will be sold exclusively through UK value-added resellers at under £1000 per annum.

ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) has been a popular source of both voice and data services over a single connection. The service provides between two to 24 channels to carry large volumes of data faster than normal telephone line connections to the Internet. However, many SMEs have found the traditional process of installing an Internet service over ISDN complex.

UUNET UK has designed Messenger to be easy to set-up following the installation of an ISDN line. Within 30 minutes, a business can be connected to the Internet using an online registration service via the UUNET UK web site. This is highly versatile and works with a business's existing investment in core computer systems.

Replacing one or more normal - analogue - telephone lines linked to stand-alone PCs with a single UUNET Messenger ISDN connection for the network can result in a more cost effective use of the Internet. Users can send and receive e-mails and large files, surf for information, or conduct electronic commerce, whilst the same line is concurrently sending and receiving faxes or voice calls.

The UUNET Messenger ISDN service provides organisations with Web access, FTP and a choice of domain name. E-mail facilities are provided for up to 25 users working on a local area network via mail hosting from UUNET or, alternatively, companies may install their own mail server. UUNET Messenger ISDN runs with the user's existing IP-enabled Microsoft NT or Novell LAN and PCs.

"The key to Internet access for a small or medium sized business is the right level of flexibility and network performance at the right price," commented Mike Cole, product portfolio manager for UUNET UK. "Recent changes in ISDN pricing make UUNET Messenger ISDN an ideal choice for those smaller businesses that want to make Internet-usage even more effective in their everyday business life".

Martin Temple, channel sales manager for UUNET UK, added: "At UUNET we believe the reseller community is well placed to advise the SME on how to best use the Internet to gain real business benefit. Our Team UUNET resellers programme provides both the expertise and a wide product portfolio to serve this thriving segment of British commerce. UUNET Messenger ISDN provides the next step up from dial-up access, before bandwidth demand requires leased line connectivity."

Pricing and availability UUNET Messenger ISDN is available from December 22nd through UUNET UK resellers and is priced at a suggested price of £976 per annum. Both Microsoft NT and Novell versions are available.
