UUNET UK INCREASES INTERNET BANDWIDTH FOR NORTH-WEST BUSINESSES

UUNET UK, part of the world¹s leading Internet services company and a wholly owned subsidiary of WorldCom, is increasing its Internet bandwidth in the North West to provide local businesses with faster and more resilient connections for e-mail, file transfer and web access. UUNET UK is upgrading its Manchester Internet hub, or Point of Presence (PoP) with higher bandwidth capability, installing twin 155 m/bps and a single 8m/bps data links to the rest of the UUNET network. The enhancement is set to go live in mid-August. This further enhances the service that UUNET UK provides in the North-West and demonstrates an ongoing commitment to improve Internet infrastructure for UUNET¹s numerous North-West business users.

"North West businesses can now benefit from very quick and cost effective connection to the Internet with these new improvements. This is very important for any business that uses the Internet because speed and efficient working is of the essence to any company," said Judith Blair, Technical Manager at UUNET UK.

To complement this infrastructural development, the company has formed a partnership with Telecity, a Manchester science park based facilities management specialist with £1.5 million investment from venture capitalists 3I. This will allow local businesses to benefit from close proximity to a major node and co-location of managed service, as well as expert assistance on the TeleCity site.

Mike Parkington of UUNET, who was heavily involved in the negotiations with TeleCity said: "We have a good fit with TeleCity, and their central Manchester location is ideal for delivery of our services to local businesses. As the Internet continues to become a more serious business tool, you need quality service at your PoP, and having a reliable facilities management company in attendance allows us to provide the service our customers expect."

Telecity was started by Mike Kelly, who had previously worked with UUNET UK on a research project at the University Manchester: "We have found that our location has been key in this deal because it enables us to serve clients far more effectively. After starting Telecity, we began approaching Internet Service Providers (ISPs) about our facilities management expertise. I was delighted to join forces with UUNET UK because they are a leading ISP," said Mike, TeleCity Managing Director.
