Verizon Business Unveils $1Million Lab to Showcase Environmentally Friendly Optical LAN Solutions for Federal Customers

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. - Verizon Business today formally unveiled a $1 million laboratory for federal customers interested in the company's environmentally friendly Optical LAN Solutions.

The 1,200-square-foot lab in Columbia, Md., showcases Verizon's next-generation, passive optical network (PON) architecture. The company's Optical LAN Solutions (OLS), built on industry-leading IT standards, is fully converged, meaning it carries voice, data and video on a single fiber.

In addition to the efficiencies of a converged network, the OLS reduces power consumption through its use of passive optical network technology, which requires no additional regeneration of power for up to 12 miles from a campus data center. The solution is suitable for a single building or large campus environment -- whether customers are installing new facilities or upgrading their current LAN infrastructures.

"Our federal customers can see for themselves why the OLS is a true green solution that is secure, scalable and can meet the needs of their future networks," said Ed Hill, director of program management at Verizon. "We want our customers to understand how this solution can help their agencies improve network efficiencies, enhance network capacity and streamline capital costs."

The services underlying PON technology have the capability to expand, with technology advances, to 25 terahertz worth of bandwidth. This high-bandwidth capability provides for sharing large files such as computer aided design (CAD) drawings, imaging, streaming video and other forms of bandwidth-heavy, real-time collaboration.

The OLS can provide significant savings versus conventional copper and multimode cables used with traditional network infrastructure. Compared with a traditional switch-based Ethernet solution serving 1,000 users, a Verizon OLS built to serve the same number of users can reduce power consumption by up to 75 percent, space requirements by up to 80 percent , and capital costs related to network elements by up to 74 percent.

Verizon Business currently offers the OLS to federal government agencies in the U.S.
