Verizon Releases Second Annual Cloud Computing Market Report

IT controls the cloud, so says the Verizon State of the Market: Enterprise Cloud 2014 Report. While there has been much written lately about growing pockets of “shadow IT” within the enterprise, 80 percent of cloud spend is managed by the IT department and more than half is actually directed by the CIO, according to the cloud computing marketing report.

This is Verizon’s second annual cloud market report providing original data and analysis of cloud usage within the enterprise, and its impact on the IT organization and business at large. It is the only cloud report combining internal data from one of the industry’s most experienced cloud services providers with data and insight from third-party analyst and research firms. It presents both a snapshot of current cloud trends, along with analysis and predictions on the future of cloud in the enterprise.

The data from this year’s cloud computing market report was drawn from a variety of internal and external sources, including Verizon’s 2013 State of the Enterprise Cloud Report, Verizon cloud usage data (consolidated and anonymized) from August 2013 to July 2014, Verizon cloud customer survey, 451 Research survey and analysis commissioned by Verizon, HBR Analytic Services report on Business Agility in the Cloud (sponsored by Verizon) and third-party reports from Accenture, Forrester Research, Gartner and IDC.

Key findings from this year’s cloud market report include:

  • Cloud is mainstream. Sixty-five (65) percent of enterprises surveyed are using cloud. Seventy-one (71) percent of Verizon’s cloud customers say they are running external-facing production applications in the cloud (up from 60 percent last year).
  • Cloud spend continues to grow. Enterprise spend on cloud has grown 38 percent in the last year.
  • It’s not just about saving money. Only 14 percent of enterprises said reducing cost was the main motive in using cloud.
  • Enterprise will move more important workloads to the cloud. Seventy-one (71) percent of enterprises expect to be using cloud for external-facing applications by 2017
  • Availability matters. When asked what factors they rate most important in a cloud service, 84 percent of Verizon customers rated uptime as “very important.”
