CLINTON, Miss., July 25, 2002 – WorldCom, Inc. (Nasdaq: WCOEQ, MCWEQ) today responded to a Wall Street Journal report claiming that the U.S. Department of Justice is considering indicting the company for fraud.
The following statement should be attributed to Brad Burns, WorldCom spokesperson:
"WorldCom disclosed the accounting entries leading to the announced restatement promptly upon discovery and since that time the company has been cooperating fully with all federal and state law enforcement authorities. We have been advised that those authorities are satisfied with WorldCom's cooperation to date. Also, we have not been informed by any law enforcement authority that it presently intends to seek an indictment against the company."
