The last frontier brought to your home with the launch of British army Antarctic expedition 11.30am, 22nd May 2001, Painted Hall, Royal Naval College, Greenwich in the presence of patron HRH The Prince of Wales
Live Internet link-ups from the British Army Antarctic Expedition, launched today (22nd May 2001) in the presence of patrons, HRH The Prince of Wales and General Sir Michael Walker, will offer a unique insight into the world's most remote frontier.
The expedition is co-sponsored by WorldCom, the leading global communications company. Cormac Whelan, Vice-President of Marketing believes that the use of the Internet will enable an international audience to experience the excitement of the expedition. It will also allow field studies and data to be relayed direct to academic institutions in the UK for immediate analysis.
"We are increasingly turning to the Internet to gain immediate access to news of great events. Everyone from school children upwards will be able to participate in some small way. We are delighted to be supporting this expedition which represents a major feat of endurance for those involved."
The expedition's web site (www.antarctic-expedition.org) will be updated regularly with text, still and video pictures taken by professional photographer Tim Hall.
As the boundaries between entertainment, computing and communication technologies merge WorldCom believes that the delivery channel for the latest information is becoming irrelevant. "We are now the Digital Generation" comments Mr Whelan, "and when it comes to keeping up to date, we are unconcerned whether the screen we use is that of a computer or a television."
The expedition yacht John Laing will depart at the end of August 2001 after having appeared at the International Festival of the Sea in Portsmouth.
