WorldCom was judged Best Carrier at the October 1 2001 World Communications Awards at the London Hilton. An impressive panel of judges selected WorldCom against finalists KPNQWest and Cable and Wireless.
The awards are run by EMAP Publishing Communications Group in association with Andersen and the Best Carrier award is the premier corporate category. The judges' citation said:
"In terms of a world-class carrier WorldCom are the most serious." They cited 'the company's substantive operations and demonstrable quality, ambition and customer satisfaction' and went on to say: "The testimonials of key enterprise users was decisive in setting WorldCom apart."
They referred to the European network "covering 21 countries - stretching 15,929 kilometers. Worldcom prides itself on being both a network service provider and through its UUNET network an Internet service provider." They considered it a "powerful player".
WorldCom was described as having established a "genuine global presence".
In a quickfire awards ceremony run by UK comedian Graham Norton, the impressive trophy was received for WorldCom by Richard Woods, senior manager of UK corporate communications.
