More than 10,000 attendees and 480 exhibiting companies converged in San Diego on Tuesday for day one of DistribuTECH, the world’s largest energy and utilities conference. The common consensus amongst attendees is that 2015 will be a pivotal year for the energy and utilities industry and change will come faster than expected.

Key themes resonating on the expo floor include the need to upgrade an aging infrastructure, advances in Smart Grid technology and increased security measures as the adoption of connected-devices continues to proliferate throughout the industry.

Some of the takeaways from today’s event included a keynote from theoretical physicist Dr. Michio Kaku who talked about the issues facing the sector, including the dangers of solar flares to intelligent wall paper that can interact with people or machines.

Other highlights included discussions by Jeff Martin, CEO of San Diego Gas & Electric and Theodore F. Craver Jr., CEO of Edison International, who both spoke about the need for enterprises to embrace new technology in order to deliver value to their customers.

“We’re responding to the industry’s need for Smart Grid solutions that can be built on a scalable, secure platform that delivers two-way communication from meters, substations and other technologies,” said Michael Brander, managing director, energy and utilities practice, Verizon Enterprise Solutions. “Our clients want to take advantage of the Internet of Things and connected solutions to deliver more value to their customers. We’re here to show them how.”
